What is your business name and how did you come up with it?
Jewellery can mean more than just a pretty gift. Jewellery has the power to convey the message that ‘You are appreciated. You are not taken for granted. You are not alone. You are loved.’
Fair Bloom is the vision of all women knowing their true beauty and worth. As a Christian creative, I believe that each of us is wonderfully acceptable, uniquely ourselves and definitely, definitely enough! There is no need to strive and prove ourselves to be more of this or less of that. My hope is that every woman would know that they are a fair, beautiful bloom.
What products do you sell?
I design and craft beaded jewellery to celebrate and affirm the women in our lives. I also customise one-of-a-kind pieces to capture your memories for keepsake or to gift to someone special. All customers need to do is fill in a questionnaire and leave the rest up to me.
What does a typical day look like?
The days are typically filled with designing, experimenting, beading, online shopping (for beads and supplies of course!), and business development. All these while accompanied (or distracted) by my clingy whippet puppy.
What hours are you open?
I sell my jewellery via online platforms, hence anyone can make a purchase at anytime.
How many people are behind your business?
My husband plays a pivotal role in supporting me behind-the-scenes. His love for Excel sheets has brought some much-needed organisation and structure to the business. His insistence on boundaries, fixed working hours and scheduled breaks has been essential in preventing burn-out and neck aches. He is a great sounding board and my Number 1 fan. I wouldn’t know what I would do without him!
When did you launch?
In August 2017.
What's your favourite part of running your business?
Nothing quite beats the satisfaction of creating a new piece for the first time. The trial of the experimentation process, narrowing down the options of pattern, materials and colours, making mistakes, cutting up beadwork...all culminating into that final moment when everything falls into place; the beads confirm that this is how they were meant to be put together, and the message to be conveyed through that piece is captured fully. What a rewarding feeling that brings!
What got you into the business?
Growing up, I have always enjoyed making things with my hands, and after graduating from university, I picked up jewellery-making as a hobby. During this time, I tried a little of everything - from chainwork to Chinese knotting, with beadwork mixed up in there. I started out learning from books, patterns and videos. Working with beads was very satisfying for me as I enjoyed the intricacy and detail of the finished result. Moving to the UK from Singapore in 2016 opened up a whole new world of beading for me - guilds, societies, craft shows, workshops, bead fairs and more. It was then I decided to take a bold step and turn this hobby of mine into what we know as Fair Bloom today.
What makes your business unique?
Every piece of jewellery I make holds a personal story or memory within. The different collections I have, “Her Stories,” “Truth,” “Celebrate Her” and “Meet the Maker” tell you what has inspired the piece. This makes the jewellery more than just another accessory to own. Each piece has deeper significance and their story is told in a little card to the receiver of the gift. I hope that as they relate to the story, they would feel comforted, encouraged and affirmed because of that.
Additionally, I hope this will make it easy for anyone to appreciate the women in their lives! If they are struggling to decide on what to buy, these collections will help them articulate their feelings and express their thoughts about their special someone.
Have you any previous experience or interest in this field?
As shared previously, creating has always brought me great joy and I have dabbled in all sorts of crafts and creative arts from a young age.
Do you have a shop/website?
Do you offer specialist services?
I enjoy customising unique pieces to capture individual stories. I feel customised jewellery can hold so much weight and significance, making it more than just a pretty accessory. It can spark conversation and make the receiver feel so special and affirmed. All customers need to do is fill in a questionnaire and leave the rest up to me.
Where are you located? Does your location reflect your product?
I work from my home in Milton Keynes.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes I do ship worldwide.
How do the seasons affect your business?
The seasons do not affect my business as jewellery is for all occasions :) what they do affect is my inspiration as I am very inspired by nature - its changing colours, shapes and textures.
Do you have any projects coming up?
My latest collection is designed to make it easy to affirm and encourage the women in our lives. “Celebrate her” is inspired by her qualities which have touched your heart, and each piece is named after a particular trait. Grandma always says the right things when times are tough - Celebrate her “Wisdom.” Deeply touched by a friend’s heartfelt gesture in a time of need? Celebrate her “Kindness.”There are currently only 3 pieces in this collection but there are more to come. If you have any specific quality you would like to affirm in someone, do get in touch with your suggestion!
What has been your biggest achievement in your business?
Having my first ever booth at the Etsy Milton Keynes Artisan Fair! Seeing the intangible idea of Fair Bloom come together as a physical booth was very surreal. To me, it felt like the culmination of months of hard work.
What has been your biggest hurdle?
Definitely self-doubt as I have no experience in business management, finance or marketing. Everything had to be learnt from scratch and I don’t think I will ever stop learning!
What do you think has made your business successful?
Success to me is being able to share the message of Fair Bloom. Thus, receiving feedback for my jewellery affirms me that it is relatable and connects with women from all walks of life.
What advice would you give someone looking to start a business?
Start with ‘why’ - why do you do what you do? It is so easy to get caught up with the whats and the hows, the daily grind of the making and selling, focusing on statistics and sales, that we forget why we started doing these things in the first place. The ‘why’ will get us through discouraging moments and challenging periods which will come with any self-employed business.
To quote Simon Sinek, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
What is your price range of products?
Ready-to-order items range from £8 - £28, while made-to-order/customised pieces start from £20.
What are your popular products?
My simple pendant necklaces are well-received along with my solitaire rings. The piece that has received the most attention would be the ring called ‘Precious,’ which features a semi-precious morganite stone encased with Swarovski crystals and glass seed beads.
Where do you see your business in 5 years' time?
I would like to see my jewellery being displayed in brick-and-mortar shops, and spend most of my time designing and creating customised pieces.
Tell us a little about you the owner?
I am married to the most supportive husband anyone could ask for, and we are accompanied by our cheeky but handsome whippet puppy. I love spicy food; the spicier the better, and soaking in nature’s piercing beauty.
If you had to describe your business in five words, what would they be?
Personal, Feminine, Affirming, Intricate and Unique
Who is your business aimed at?
Every and any woman! I believe jewellery cannot and will not be a worthy measure of a woman’s beauty but is merely a reflection of it. All women are beautiful and a gift of jewellery helps to bring it out.
Would you join me in celebrating the women in our lives? They have nurtured us and impacted us in countless ways. Let’s celebrate them!
What makes you stand out from your competitors?
This is a tricky question as I am not out to compete with anyone for sales or likes. As shared previously, Fair Bloom is about sharing the message of appreciating and affirming the women in our lives and hence, if other businesses encourage such an attitude in people, we should celebrate!
Have you got anything exciting coming up?
I will be having a booth at the Etsy Milton Keynes Artisan Fair on Saturday, 9 June 2018, at INTU Milton Keynes. I hope to see you there x
