Itchy & Sketchy

What is your business name and how did you come up with it?

Our small business is called Itchy & Sketchy. We came up with the name by combining two of our favourite things, travelling and art.

Breaking the two names down, they each have a meaning that combined made a name that summed us up and we loved it!

Itchy, meaning itchy feet; we love travelling and seeing the world and the different products and ideas that are all around the world.

Sketchy, meaning art; we have always been creative and wanted to put this passion to good use.

What products do you sell?

We are a small business that produces handcraft home accessories and special occasion gifts. We range from wooden signs for your home to new born personalised signs to wedding accessories to make your big day even more personal.

We create designs that best suit our passion and have these available on our website. But we also offer a personalised service for those that want their own details to put on to a wooden sign, card or print.

What does a typical day look like?

A typical day for me currently is going to my fulltime job from 9-5:30 and then returning home to work on new orders and new ideas that I would like to advertise and add to the website.

It can be very difficult and tiring to come home after a full day’s work to then jump in and practically try to do half a day’s work in an evening, but I make the most of the time I have and feel good every time I move forward a couple of steps.

What hours are you open?

You can contact us at any time of the day via our email or Instagram and our website is open all hours for new orders. We will respond to any enquiries within a few hours, and will be more than happy to help as soon as possible!

How many people are behind your business? Who are they?

Now it is definitely a family effort to make Itchy & Sketchy work. Although I do all of the physical making of the products, get the designs together and get them ready to be shipped out. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the help of my Dad cutting and sanding my new wood when it arrives and my Mum painting the plaques whilst I am at work. Also, my boyfriend is a huge help when it comes to updating the website and helping with social media.

Itchy & Sketchy wouldn’t be where it is now without them all.

When did you launch?

We began the Instagram page just over about a year ago now. It started off as a page for motivational artwork that was hand drawn every day. We loved the idea of chalkboards, so this is the avenue we started to draw our motivational artwork on.

Then throughout the year we had an interest from family and friends for these quotes to be made into home accessories. We now, as of this month have a website live to everyone that our orders can be bought and delivered right to your doorstep.

What's your favourite part of running your business?

The best part of the business is having the ability to try anything I want; new ideas, new techniques and products that you guys will love.

The best feeling is when your customer receives their order and are over the moon with it. It really does make you want to carry on and work super hard.

What got you into the business?

I wanted to get into something new, as I really wasn’t enjoying my job at the time. I had always loved being creative and found it a great escape from having a bad day at my office job.

Being behind a computer every day, doing the same thing definitely isn’t for me so this is my start to what will hopefully be a fulltime job, allowing me to be completely happy and love what I do.

What makes your business unique?

What I love about Itchy & Sketchy is that the possibilities are endless, and the customer can be involved in the whole design process if they wish.

Our personal orders are unique to every customer and with the artwork mockup they receive before I produce the product, means that they can be involved and be excited of the item they are making.

I love working with the customers and seeing how far we can really go.

Have you any previous experience or interest in this field?

Other than studying two years of Photography at Sixth Form, I really have no real qualifications in this field of art. Everything that I have done so far has been self-taught from watching people I find interesting on Social Media, trying out lots and lots of different materials and generally just throwing myself in at the deep end.

Do you have a shop/website?

We have a website that has recently gone live and we absolutely love it! It can be found by going to

On there you can view all our products, make orders and also view the gallery for inspiration on projects that we have completed in the past.

Do you offer specialist services?

Yes, we offer personalised orders on our website from new born baby signs, family signs, quotes and also, we offer wedding materials for the big day!

I must say, the personalised orders are my favourite thing to do! I love all the different ideas people have and the fact every order is completely different.

Where are you located? Does your location reflect your product?

We are based in London and don’t think our products reflect this as such. We try our best to produce projects that anyone would love.

How do the seasons affect your business?

Although you will see a constant flow of products available throughout the year. We do add additional items during the seasonal times of the year (Valentines, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Summer, Christmas).

We are excited to be able to offer fresh ideas this year throughout the seasons.

Do you have any projects coming up?

We do have a batch of ideas that are being worked on and refined now. Any new products that will be added to our website will be advertised on our Instagram so you can be updated along the way and not miss out!

What has been your biggest achievement in your business?

I would say that our biggest achievement is seeing how far we have come in such a short amount of time. This really wasn’t what we expected and are very proud of what we have achieved so far.

What has been your biggest hurdle?

I think the hardest thing about this small business is having the time to really get stuck in and push it like we want to. Having the confidence in myself to advertise my work and take on more orders with little time whilst working fulltime.

What do you think has made your business successful?

It’s early days but I think what has made Itchy & Sketchy successful so far is the passion and energy that we have for the products we create and the service we give. The care and attention that goes into each order means that the customer is always happy.

What advice would you give someone looking to start a business?

If someone was thinking about starting a business, I would definitely advise that they think hard about what it is that they want to invest so much time and possibly money into. But other than having a good idea of what you are passionate about then I would say ‘just jump in’. Jump in and give it all you’ve got!

What is your price range of products?

Most of our products range from £2.00 to £20.00. The Bespoke items, such as wedding products and other larger items can be higher in price but this will be stated to the customer before purchasing.

What are your popular product/services?

Our most popular products and services are the personalised items from wooden signs, to cards to wedding signs. People love the ability to have that special gift tailored to them and we are so happy to be able to help them get just what they want.

Where do you see your business in 5 years' time?

I hope that our business would have thrived within 5 years and that I will be working on it fulltime so that I can really put all of my attention into it.

I hope that we begin to feature in gift shops and other avenues for people to buy our products on the High street and online and really just enjoy working everyday...that's the most important thing.

Tell us a little about you the owner?

I currently am working as a Production Co-Ordinator with a print and distribution company. We work with international clients within the Educational sector and help them produce their seasons marketing materials.

If you had to describe your business in five words, what would they be?

Passionate, Creative, Exciting, Trendy and Beautiful

Who is your business aimed at?

Our business is aimed at both male and female customers, but mostly female ranging from the ages of 18 to 35.

We do have interest from customers from the ages of 35-55 also and love to work with these however the majority of customers are female and aged 18 to 35.

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

I think that the service we offer and the positive customer attitude that comes along with us makes us stand out from others. I thrive to make products for the customers and make them as happy as I can with the items they order.

We would go above and beyond to make their order just right.
