Ploopypoopy

What is your business name and how did you come up with it?

My business name is ploopypoopy – it came simply one day & doesn’t mean much, but it stuck.

What products do you sell/services do you offer?

I make mostly paper products – books, prints, bookmarks, stickers, however I also make pins & totes.

What does a typical day look like?

I wouldn’t say there is a typical day! It all depends on what comes in that day. If there is an order or two coming through I work on that, if not I try to work & think by making new things. I’m always on the lookout for inspiration – it mainly comes through reading & going for walks, if I’m honest.

What hours are you open?

I run my business online so I am open 24/7.

How many people are behind your business?

It’s mainly just me! I design and make all the things myself. I do get second & third opinions from friends & family though, when I’m not quite sure how something would turn out.

When did you launch?

I launched late 2016! However - I only started devoting more time to my shop recently.

What's your favourite part of running your business?

I really enjoy designing & making, but also packaging! I do all the packaging myself. Admittedly during busy seasons it gets a bit difficult to hand-package & hand-write everything, but I do think it’s worth it :-)

What got you into the business?

A couple of years back I bought a few things from etsy sellers & one day thought maybe I could be one myself! I then started the shop with just a handful of items.

What makes your business unique?

I think the unique point of my business is that it is not just nominally Christian – the inspiration & work from God is through & through, even in the products that are not evidently ‘Christian-based’. I always hope that I can inspire just one person through each work.

Have you any previous experience or interest in this field?

I was doing design work since a few years prior, & I studied visual arts formally till I was 18. I have always enjoyed creating though!

Do you have a shop/website?

I sell mainly on etsy, & most of my updates come through on instagram.

Do you offer specialist services?

Yes I do! I have completed a couple of customised orders, & many of my paper products come with a personalisation option.

Where are you located? Does your location reflect your product?

I am located in Cardiff, although I shuttle frequently between there & Singapore, where I am from. I would say that my work is largely inspired by long walks in parks, which are common to both places :-)

Do you ship worldwide?

I ship worldwide!

How do the seasons affect your business?

In certain seasons of the year I get busier, so I try to schedule things like stock updates, supply orders, and major design work before the busy periods. I do try to make seasonal stock over key periods and holidays e.g. Christmas, and the change of seasons - it’s a nice way for me to change up my colour and texture palette!

Do you have any projects coming up?

I am doing a bit of commercial editorial work at the moment, but I’m also working on a new line of pin work. In the meantime I am steadily churning out original paintings for sale!

What has been your biggest achievement in your business?

I think just seeing how people enjoy their orders is fruit enough for me! When customers send in pictures of my work in their home I get so excited.

What has been your biggest hurdle?

I think the biggest hurdle for me has been to anticipate what people like; there have been designs & products that I thought would do well but didn’t, & in the same fashion there have been many products I never thought much of but people actually like. To find my own ‘style’ is also something I have been finding difficult to pin down.

What do you think has made your business successful?

I think being adaptable to difficult situations & seasons is what keeps me going, knowing that I don’t yet know it all & being willing to change & unlearn what I know in order to make way for something more. This is relevant to all parts of my work – design, creation, fulfilling orders even.

What advice would you give someone looking to start a business?

I would say good photographs are key! & to be responsive & helpful as a seller. For a lot of people it starts off a difficult & fruitless venture but if you believe in the work you produce & treat it with love, people will love it too :-)

What is your price range of products?

£3 - £20

What are your popular products?

My notebooks are fairly popular! & Christian prints as well.

Where do you see your business in 5 years' time?

I hope to continue selling by myself in 5 years, hopefully donating to charities through my work.

Tell us a little about you the owner?

My name is Chelsea, I am 20 & I am an architecture student by day & by night. I have been making, designing, and photographing for commission since I was 14. I worked as a preschool teacher for a year, & I really enjoy reading books.

If you had to describe your business in five words, what would they be?

Paper products for God’s glory :-)

Who is your business aimed at?

I don’t think there is a particular demographic, but I’ve often imagined that the people who buy my work are the ones who have lots of plants at home!

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

I have never really seen anyone as a competitor to be honest, each maker is unique in his/her own way & it’s never been a case of trying to one-up anyone :-) I love the work of all the people in the community, & their support is very appreciated!

Have you got anything exciting coming up?

I’m hoping to make a calendar for 2019!
